Service and recreation
There is a horse farm at Árnanes, as well as a horse rental, and guests can go riding on Icelandic horses and take both shorter and longer trips. The hotel rents out bikes. Trout fishing is also possible. The neighbouring fishing town Höfn is about a 15-minute-drive away, where guests will find coffee houses, restaurants, supermarkets and a swimming pool. There is furthermore a 9-hole golf course in the town, Silfurnesvöllur.
The kingdom of glaciers and dwellings of birds
Árnanes is centrally located in a green and giving countryside, where neighbours include glacial rivers and the magical and icy world of Vatnajökull glacier. 40 km away (25 mi), organized excursions on either super jeeps or snowmobiles depart. In the town Höfn, guests will find an interesting glacier exhibition, located in the same house as the tourist information centre. There are many and varied hiking routes in the region, over mountains and through valleys by the southern edge of Vatnajökull national park. Some routes are lined with informational signs. The shore by Höfn is a protected nature reserve and birdlife is rich, where more trails and hiking routes are to be explored, also including information on signs at selected locations.
Jökulsárlón Lagoon in Breiðamerkursandur
The world-famous Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon is about an hour’s drive west from Árnanes (75 km / 46.6 mi). The route passes the southern foothills of Vatnjökull, and winds through grand landscapes and the harbour-free south coast. It is a charming area to explore for those interested in magnificent nature, hikes and mountain climbing. Boat rides on the lagoon are offered.
The beautiful Lón and Skaftafell national park
The region north of Hornafjörður is known as Lón (30 km / 18.6 mi from Árnanes). A great selection of hiking routes through prime landscapes, either by the shore, through narrow valleys or in the mountains. The Ring Road passes through Lón. The national park Skaftafell is 116 km (72 mi) west of Árnanes and (50 km / 31 mi) from Jökulsárlón.
