The magic of glaciers

Nýpugarðar are in the southern Mýrar region in fjord Hornafjörður, about 4 km from route no 1 (the ‘Ring Road’), and a little east of river Hólmsá. The farm is on a hill with views over the lowlands and the world of icefalls and mountains unparalleled in the country – the southern Vatnajökull national park. A little further east along the ring road you’ll find a gravel path that most vehicles can pass, which goes to Fláajökull (10 km / 6 mi from the highway) -- a popular outdoor and hiking area.

Vatnajökull National Park, Heinabergssvæðið and Hjallanes

West of glacier Fláajökull is Heinabergsjökull glacier, now split in to along Hafrafellsháls ridge. It’s the home of two popular outdoor areas, namely Heinabergssvæði and Hjallanes. Each of these areas has many marked hiking trails – in Hjallanes, you can follow a marked trail to the southern icefall Skálafellsjökull, and there’s a circular trail to follow in Heinabergssvæðið. Just west off river Kolgríma you can drive up to Skálafell, where the Hjallanes hike starts. You can also follow a gravel path (passable by most vehicles) through Heinabergssvæðið (7.7 km / 4.8 mi to the parking lot). You could also join one of the daily, guided snowmobile tours to Skálafellsjökull.

Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, Skaftafell National Park, Lón and Lónsöræfi

Nýpugarðar are ideally located if you want to tour southeast Iceland. The renowned glacial lagoon Jökulsárlón is only 47 km / 29 mi west, and one of Iceland’s most popular outdoor attractions, national park Skaftafell, is about 104 km / 64.5 mi away. The journey east is also interesting, where you can stop in town Höfn and explore the Glacier Museum or walk along the Ósland reservation. The Almannaskarð pass, east of Höfn, has grand views over fjord Hornafjörður and the southern tip of glacier Vatnajökull. East of the pass is Lón (55 km / 34 mi), which is a charming stop for those who crave the tranquillity and natural beauty you can only experience on a quiet hike along a colourful and magnificent countryside. A little further inland are the Lónsöræfi, which no mountaineer can resist.
