4xdouble and 2x single room with a shared bathroom in the renovated farmhouse, where you’ll feel like you’ve been transported back to a proper Icelandic farm in the 70s. Fittings and fixtures, as well as some of the furniture, date back to that period. Further a 2x triple rooms in a separate renovated house called Fjósið (The cowshed) . Free Wi-Fi.
Check in: 5 pm - 7 pm. Check out: 8 am - 11 am. When arriving later than 7 pm guests are asked to inform the guesthouse.
Board
Hólmur runs a restaurant, bar, and brewery called Jón Ríki, in a former cowshed, where coffee, cakes and light meals are served during the day, and dinner in the evening during summer from 18-21. Breakfast is served at the restaurant.
The guests in the old farmhouse have access to a small kitchen and dining room during wintertime, 15.09 - 15.05.
The nearest supermarkets are in town Höfn í Hornafirði (33 km / 20.5 mi).
Service and recreation
There are marked hiking trails in the Vatnajökull national park, and the farmers will happily provide further information and hiking maps of the area. Glacier tours to Skálafellsjökull (12 km / 7.5 mi) and quad tours to Hoffellsjökull (21 km / 13 mi). Hot tubs at Hoffell (21 km / 13 mi). Hikes in the Ósland reservation. Museums in Höfn, like the Höfn Glacier Museum, where you’ll also find the local tourism information centre. Day trips to Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon (45 km / 28 mi), and to Skaftafell National Park (100 km / 62 mi). Horse rental at Árnanes (27 km / 17 mi). Höfn is the nearest town where you’ll find shops and restaurants, a swimming pool, tour operators and a range of services (33 km / 20.5 mi).
Hikes and outdoor activities by Fláajökull glacier
Hólmur is just by route no.1 (the ‘Ring Road’), in Mýrar County, which is centrally located in the Hornafjörður region. At Hólmur you are right by the magnificent and beautiful mountains and glacier icefalls in the southern Vatnajökull national park. The nearest glacier to Hólmur is Fláajökull (10 km / 6 mi), which is a popular hiking area. Most cars will be able to pass the gravel path to that area.
The Heinaberg area and Hjallanes
The next glacier west of Fláajökull is called Heinabergsjökull, where there are two popular hiking areas – Heinabergssvæði and Hjallanes, and each has many marked hiking trails. In Hjallanes, you can follow a trail to glacier Skálafellsjökull, and there’s a circular one in Heinabergssvæði. Just west of river Kolgríma is the road to Skálafell, where the route along Hjallanes starts. Turn off the Ring Road to a trail, passable by most cars, that you can follow around Heinabergssvæði (7.7 km / 4.7 km to the parking area). You could also join one of the daily, guided snowmobile tours to Skálafellsjökull glacier.
Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, Skaftafell National Park, Lón and Lónsöræfi
Hólmur is ideally located if you want to tour southeast Iceland. The renowned glacial lagoon Jökulsárlón is only 45 km / 28 mi west, and one of Iceland’s most popular outdoor attractions, national park Skaftafell, is only about 103 km / 64 mi away. The journey east is also interesting, where you can stop in town Höfn and explore the Glacier Museum or walk along the Ósland reservation. Almannaskarð, east of Höfn, has grand views over fjord Hornafjörður and the southern part of the expansive glacier Vatnajökull. It’s a charming stop for those who crave the tranquillity and natural beauty you can only experience on a quiet hike along a colourful and magnificent countryside.
