Accommodation
Two buildings with double and twin rooms, as well as family rooms that sleep three or more. The rooms are either en-suite (with shower) or share a bathroom (washbasin in the rooms). The en-suite rooms have a TV. The rooms that share a bathroom have access to cooking facilities.
Two apartments are also available, either on the ground floor or upper floor of a newly renovated house. Each apartment has two twin / double rooms, a bathroom, kitchen and living room with TV. Free Wi-Fi in all rooms, lobby and restaurant.
Board
Restaurant with bar, open all year round. Groups need to book in advance. Breakfast buffet, dinner, lunch and light refreshments served. Emphasis is on locally sourced ingredients such as lamb and arctic char, which are both farmed at Hali.
Service and recreation
Marked hiking trails. Birdwatching. Þórbergssetur, a museum dedicated to the life and works of author Þórbergur Þórðarson who grew up at Hali, is close by. Jökulsárlón is 13 km (8 mi) away. Sightseeing and tours around the Vatnajökull glacier and surrounding areas. The nearest town is Höfn (70 km / 43 mi), where there is a supermarket, a swimming pool, a golf course and various museums.
Charming nature
The landscape in the southeast of Iceland, by the foothills of Vatnajökull glacier, is quite unique. It is a landscape of great contrasts; blue ocean and black beaches; green pastures and great cliffs; grand mountains and the white vastness of the glacier. Hali and the neighbouring regions offer great outdoor options and hikers and nature lovers should find many activities to their liking within easy reach.
A museum that brings the past to the present
Þórbergssetur at Hali, which is adjacent to the restaurant, is a carefully curated and very varied museum dedicated to the life and works of Þórbergur Þórðarson, one of Iceland’s most famous 20th century authors. He was born and raised at Hali, and the museum brings the history of the farm and its surroundings to life. Here you can see a scaled model of the traditionally fashioned common room as it was during the author’s childhood at the eve of the 19th century.
Jökulsárlón lagoon, glacier excursions and Skaftafell
Hali is 13 km (8 mi) away from the glacial lagoon Jökulsárlón at Breiðamerkursandur that many claim is one of Iceland’s best-known attractions. Here, large icebergs that break of the neighbouring glacier slumber in the icy water on their way to sea. Sail on the lagoon to enjoy this artwork of nature at unmatchable proximity. About 20 km (12 mi) east of Hali it is possible to partake in various excursions in specially modified jeeps and snowmobiles that take you to the southern foothills of Vatnajökull glacier. The silvery firn, glacial radiance and magnificent view all work together for an unforgettable experience. Skaftafell, a part of Vantajökull National Park, is 70 km (43 mi) west.
