December in Iceland is a truly a great time, not only for the traditions, but also to experience long dark winter days lit up by colorful Christmas lights and decorations that Icelanders put up in beginning of the month. This time is characterized by a joyful spirit and traditions with Christmas season, or jól in Icelandic, which starts in late November with Advent and stretches over the New Year.

Standing outside in the countryside on a cold winter day, staring into the sky and watching an incredible show of Aurora Borealis is simply magical! The beauty is difficult to describe as the shows evoke feelings of tranquility, quietness and joy. In those few moments there is nothing else that matters and life becomes very simple and peaceful.
