One of the biggest events of the year in the Icelandic countryside is the sheep round-up – „réttir", which takes place in September all over the country. After running free in nature all summer, people on horses head out to find the sheep which are then gathered to a fold where they‘re sorted out by farms to which they belong. Not only farmers participate, but also people from the city and elsewhere who like to get away from their daily routines and experience some country action and nurture their Icelandic roots in this special tradition. Itinerary: 15th SeptemberYou will have your car delivered to your hotel in Reykjavik (let us book your stay in the city) and head for the south. Explore the famous Skógarfoss waterfall and drive to Vik to see the black sand beach and Dyrholaey with its beautiful gigantic black arch of lava standing in the sea. After a busy day head to the farm 683 Dalbær. Relax in the hot tub and have a traditional Icelandic dinner. The farmer will tell you what you can expect and what you will experience in the next two days. 16th SeptemberVisit the Hrunaréttir round-up in the morning. See for yourself how the farmers recognize their sheep and drag them into their slot. It is a specal feeling to take part in the round-up. Not to be missed is a visit to Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir hot spring. Your accommodation will be at Hotel Gullfoss. Dinner will be a special Icelandic „réttarsúpa“ round up soup with all the best ingredients available. 17th SeptemberNow it‘s time for Tungnaréttir round- up. The farmers usually have fun singing and drinking what they call Icelandic singing water (alcohol). In the afternoon you will have the opportunity to go horse riding (optional) Explore the national park Thingvellir, the old parliament, and in the evening you could even join the farmers in the „réttarball“ in Aratunga. It is a dance / party, very casual, and is always held in the evening of the round- up day. 18th SeptemberHead for Reykjavik where you return the car (19th in the morning). There is lots and lots to see and do in the city. Included in the package:3 nights accommodation including breakfast 3 dinners4 day car rentalRoad map
