Events & Breeders - horse adventure in NW Iceland
3rd - 9th March 2010
An excellent tour for all enthusiasts for the Icelandic horses where we head to the NW of Iceland, a region known in Iceland for its horse farms and good horse breeding. During the tour you will visit several horse farms, enjoy a couple of horse riding tours and get to join the Icelanders at an annual horse event - a horse riding tournament on ice! A great opportunity for those who love the Icelandic horse.
3rd March Welcome – transfer to the north
Upon arrival in Keflavík airport (afternoon flight) meet & greet with your horse-expert/guide. We head straight to the north to meet up with our horse friends. Early evening arrival at the horse farm Gauksmýri where we overnight the next 3 nights. Dinner.
4th March Horse riding and horse farm visits
After breakfast we join our hosts and visit their farm Gauksmýri and enjoy a horse riding tour on the ice covered pond *. After lunch we head to Grafarkot horse farm which is located in the area, followed by a visit to the horse stables of the village Hvammstangi. We end the day with either a swim in the local swimming pool or a visit to the Icelandic Seal Center in Hvammstangi village. Dinner at Gauksmýri followed by a presentation and chat. * weather permitting.
5th March Horse farm visits and horse training facilities
After breakfast we head to Hof, a farm with mixed farming of horses, sheep and hens. After lunch we visit Þingeyri horse farm, its breeding and training facilities, and get watch the training process
– it is even possible to ride in their training facilities. Dinner at a restaurant in Blönduós
village before returning to Gauksmýri farm.
6th March Horse riding tournament on Ice!! *
Farewell to Gauksmýri and we will spend today at a local horse riding event, held at the lake Svínavatn. You get to see many of the best horses of the region at their best in ice-riding and get to know some of the local horse farmers/enthusiasts. For a warm end to this cool day, we will go for a relaxing swim at the Varmahlíð swimming pool and its jacuzzi. Dinner and overnight at hotel Varmahlíð in Skagafjörður area.

7th March Horse farm visits and Sales Show
After breakfast at hotel Varmahlíð we visit Flugmýri horse farm and facilities, and Syðra-Skörðugil breeding farm. After lunch we head to the Hrímnishöll hall at farm Varmalækur for a sales show. Dinner (local food) at Áshús restaurant. Return to hotel Varmahlíð.
8th March Hólar University college and its Equine science department.
Today we visit the Hólar University and learn about their Equine science department, an international center for professional education and research. The department provides education in the fields of horse breeding, horse training, horsemanship, and riding. Furthermore, the department works towards development and innovation through research activities. Dinner at hotel Varmahlíð followed by a farewell get-together with various horse enthusiasts from the area, chatting and singing the evening away.
9th March Farewell
Today we head back south to Reykjavík city. On the way we will make a stop at a shop that specialises in equine equipment. Drop-off at your accomodation in Reykjavík.
