The Northern lights are an unforgettable sight to see. Of course their appearance can‘t be guaranteed but it is more than likely that from October until the end of March you might be able to see this natural phenomenon.  During this short self-drive getaway in the Southwest, go horse-back riding, bathe in the thermal pools and visit the Golden Circle i.e. Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir hot spring and the National park Þingvellir. Stay the first night in Reykjavík and the next 2 nights in a charming farmhouse ideally situated for sightseeing in the South.

Arrival - day 1
Enjoy life in the charming city of Reykjavik. You could check www.visitreykjavik.is or www.grapevine.is for ideas about things to do. Reykjavik has many outdoor swimming pools with geothermally heated water, open all year. One of the best health centers. You could also walk around in the charming old town in the centre of Reykjavik. Accommodation in Reykjavík.
 
Day 2
Rental car pick-up in the morning. Leave Reykjavík heading towards Hveragerði, Selfoss and Vík, on the circular route no. 1. On your way to Skógar you can take time to visit lake Þingvallavatn - The church and the old Alþingi is on the western side of the lakeshore. Head for Geysir hot spring area, continue to Gullfoss waterfall, which is only 5 minutes away. You can also visit Sólheimar, a sustainable community known for its artistic and ecological atmosphere. On your way to Skógar, you can make a stop at the beautiful waterfall of Seljalandsfoss.
 
Day 3
At daytime during the next two days you can go see some of Iceland’s beautiful pearls and you can drive as far as Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon. At night, try to find a spot where the sky is clear, if you’re lucky you might spot the Northern lights! Drive through the Mýrdalssandur black sand plains.All travellers crossing the desert of Mýrdalssandur for the first time were supposed to pile stones up to make a cairn, which would bring them good fortune on the journey.You will see the ancient Eldhraun Lava and pass a lovely little town, Kirkjubæjarklaustur, and drive through the great natural barrier. In Skaftafell you can walk to Svartifoss waterfall and drive up to Svínafellsjökull glacier
 
Day 4                                              
Today you will head back towards the airport. If you time we suggest you stop by the small and charming villages by the coast, Eyrarbakki and Stokkseyri. They have museums worth visiting such as “The House” museum in Eyrarbakki, one of Iceland’s oldest buildings, and “Þuríðarbúð” in Stokkseyri.
