Tips for travellers
Holiday preparation and planning:
- Look at the environment content of brochures and ask companies about their environmental policy.
- Take time to think about your holiday plans.
- Take time to learn in advance about the place you intend to visit.
- Consider what you really need to take with you.
- Choose natural oils and other skin preparations for body protection. Bying natural products can help a developing economy.
- Take a camera to record any wildlife you see.
- Take a few small gifts from your home country; if you then find yourself receiving local hospitality you will be able to reciprocate.
On holiday:
- Look at personal travel options. On public transport you will meet local people and travel can be cheap and interesting.
- Try your own muscle power. Walking gives you the chance to meet local people and take in the local sights.
- In rural areas try to use small, locally-owned accommodation.
- Try out local food dishes and specialities.
- Recycle bottles. If facilities are not available, tell your travel representative.
- Buy locally made crafts.
- Ask your holiday representative about local environmental issue.
Travelling:
- Try to get to the airport by public transport.
- If travelling by car, ensure your vehicle is well maintained and energy efficient.
- Consider buying local food products when you arrive. Enjoy the difference and help to support the local economy.
- Bring some food home to remind you of your holiday.
Arriving home:
- Tell your tour company of the strengths and weaknesses of the place you have visited. Say what you liked and where improvements can be made.
- Send your hosts or the friends you make a postcard or seasonal greetings card thanking them for sharing their country with you.
