Interesting attractions in the back garden
Hotel Laki is in the “Landbrot” region, so named because of the large lava field, which was a result of an eruption in Lakagígar in 1783. “Landbrot” means “where land breaks”. The landscape is quite special and a hike or a drive through some of the region’s more prominent features is ideal. There among are “Landbrotshólar”, fake craters that cover over 50 km2 (19 mi2) and that were most likely formed during the great Eldgjá eruption of 934. Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon is a marvellous work of nature just west of the village Kirkjubæjarklaustur and it is possible to hike either along the canyon’s edges or along the canyon itself, in which case be mindful of the river.
Vatnajökull National Park, Lakagígar and Eldgjá
Varied hikes and excursions can be taken from village Kirkjubæjarklaustur during the summer season. These hikes will take you through the countryside or along the highland edge. The most famous highland nature close to Landbrot is the Lakagígar volcanic system, which consists of craters along a 25-km-long (15.5 mi) fissure. The lava flow from the 1783 eruption was the most voluminous of historical times in the whole world (69 km / 43 mi from the hotel). Close to Lakagíar (3 km / 1.8 mi) is another unique and protected natural phenomenon, Eldgjá. Eldgjá is a 70-km-long (43.5 mi) fissure that last erupted in 934. Both of these volcanic systems are within the boundaries of the Vatnajökull National Park. Staff members in Kirkjubæjarklaustur give further information about tours, excursions, accessibility and conduct at these sensitive areas.
Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon
Skaftafell Park is 66 km (41 mi) away from the hotel. To reach it, drive east along the Ring Road through green lands and mossy lava fields, across the long sands of Skeiðarársandur. It is one of the most popular stops in the larger national park. The flora is beautiful and the weather is ideal, as the sharp peaks of the overlooking mountains and glaciers guard the park. The glacial lagoon Jökulsárlón is a further 60 km (37 mi) away. This lagoon is one of Iceland’s most famous attractions and boat trips on the lagoon come highly recommended. There really is no other way to appreciate the beautiful result of the partnership of glacier and sea.
