Fljótsdalshérað – a world of diverse possibilities for tourists

The Fljótsdalshérað region is wide and the landscape varied and beautiful. It is blessed with pleasant climate when gentle winds blow from south and southwesterly directions and it is unusually warm by Icelandic standards. There are many places of interest for nature enthusiasts and hikers, such as Stórurð by Dyrfjöll mountains, Hengifoss waterfall (the second highest in Iceland), Hallormsstaðaskógur forest and bay of Atlavík. For hiking maps and further information about the area, head to the East Iceland Tourist Information Centre in Egilsstaðir.

Highland farms - Sænautasel

Running from Fljótsdalshérað region are vast highland heaths where settlement was quite widespread under difficult circumstances from the middle of the 19th century and into the first half of the 20th century. Highland farm Sænautasel (75 km / 46.6 mi) was settled in the years 1843-1943. Legend has it that this farm was the model for the turf house in Independent People, a novel by Nobel Prize winner Halldór Laxness. The farm has now been renovated and is exhibited to tourists. Refreshments available.

Day trips to the East fjord villages

It is ideal to take day trips from Eyvindará to the fjords to the south of the Fljótsdalshérað region. Borgarfjörður eystri (70 km / 43.4 mi) is famous for its natural beauty. You can also visit Seyðisfjörður via Fjarðarheiði heath, a beautiful fishing village embraced by high mountains, which is only about 30 km / 18.6 mi away. Through Fagridalur, the route goes to Reyðarfjörður (35 km / 21.7 mi) and then to Eskifjörður (15 km / 9.3 mi), fishing and industrial villages with curious museums amongst other things. From Reyðarfjörður the route goes through the tunnel to Fáskrúðsfjörður (17 km / 10.5 mi), a small village by a beautiful fjord with an interesting museum and various memorabilia about the French sailors who were stationed there in the latter half of the 19th century and into the 20th century.
